Chasing the Northern Lights

Greenland - 2016

After Kilimanjaro and Antartica, I grasped the idea of adventure travel and expanded my horizons to explore different places I would have not previously thought of. I would reach out to local agencies in the destinations that I was interested in going to so I could delve in the local culture. One of the places that I went to was Greenland. The highlight of that trip was a chance to see the northern lights. I’ve been to Iceland and Norway three times just to get a glimpse of the northern lights and I never got a chance to see them during those trips.

My Greenland trip, I went with three young Kuwaiti guys. It was with one of my work colleagues at Equate. He’s also passionate about exploring and loves to go on adventures. He approached me to go on a trip with him, his brother, and friend, since it wasn’t a trip for the faint hearted or one that hasn’t had previous experience of roughing it in the wild. The four of us went on the trip. We had a guide with us from the UK where we all met in Greenland.

We ended up in a sleepy town that was only made up of a population of 200. It was very slow passed, however the beauty of the place was a sight for sore eyes. Blankets of snow covered every inch of the town. While camping on the excursion, every day before nightfall we would build a wall of ice to protect the tents from the harsh winds. It took us about two hours to build and it would keep us insulated and protected us from the severe weather conditions. The trip was lasted for seven days. The activities included skiing and sledding. Not to be confused with dog sledding, because we were the ones pulling the sled that had everything we needed for the trip. It was heavy around 50kg. Keep in my we were miles away for any sort of cellular or data connection.

We had set ourselves targets for each day to reach certain areas across Greenland. On the night that we saw the northern lights was simply amazing. The image is burned in my memory and I will never forget it. We were lucky, because we saw it on the last day of the excursion. It was a perfect ending to the trip. Also, on the last day we had lunch with the locals, and we tried whale meat for the first time. It was very tough, but it wasn’t bad. There were very few tourists in that area, most of them are visitors from Sweden.
